Lecture 3

In this weeks lecture, Biljana Jancic expanded on her practice as an installation based artist working with architectural spaces, light and technology focusing on its relationship with the viewing experience for the audience. Jancic works with the adaptation of spaces alongside the features and environment around it. She states it as an”intervention” and “playing with the materiality and what is already there”. Her approach to extending space with reflections and light in her works “Exit Strategies” (2016) and “Surface Tension” (2017) has created an illusion for the audience to immerse themselves in. One major drawback to Jancic’s concepts could be that her themes of the intervention of light and space become reoccurring and repetitive.

I was particularly drawn towards her work “The Cloud” and its connection towards the contemporary culture and its social comment on sharing every thing on “The Cloud” making our own reality within the internet. She managed to capture this issue through allowing the audience to enter a reality fabricated by technology. Jancic’s work Personally reminded me of “The Trueman Show” and how reaching the cloud shows the end to a false reality, ultimately revealing to the audience the intervention of technology towards individuals.

Other works which included pipes and live feeds were not as fascinating to me as pipes and live feeds are nothing out of the ordinary on the streets. the only thing that captivated me from her these works was the essence of time in relation to the work. I was intrigued by how she adapted the use of light and its constant changes within the live feeds of still objects, creating shadows and pockets of light. Jancic has effectively brought her audience together with her installations and allowed them to have a better understanding of the relationships between the realities created by man.
